Eleanor Alexander
Associate Professor
(PhD, Brown University, 1996) specializes in African-American history. Her research interests include nineteenth-century African-American life and gender history. Her sub-specialty is gender relations during that period, as evidence by her book, Lyrics of Sunshine and Shadow: the Tragic Courtship and Marriage of Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Alice Ruth Moore. The book has the distinction of being reviewed on the cover of the New York Times Book Review (August 18, 2002). Eleanor is the second professor in the history of Georgia Tech to receive this honor. Her book was also cited as a Notable Book of the Year (2002) by the New York Times. Currently Eleanor is researching a new book that will be called, Slaves in The White House. It will examine the experiences of those in bondage who worked in the executive mansion under nine slave-owning presidents.
