Jonathan Schneer

(PhD, Columbia University, 1978), a specialist in modern British history, has just begun work on a history of the Balfour Declaration, which in 1917 committed Britain to support establishment of a national home in Palestine for the Jewish people. His last book, The Thames: England's River, came out during spring 2005. He is the author of four additional books: Ben Tillett: Portrait of a Labor Leader (1982); Labour's Conscience: The Labour Left 1945-1951 (1987); George Lansbury (1992); and London 1900: The Imperial Metropolis (1999). He is also the co-editor of two books: Social Conflict and the Political Order in Modern Britain (1980) and Visions of History (1984) and the author of numerous articles and reviews. A fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies in 1985-86, he has also held research fellowships at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the UK . He was a founding editor of Radical History Review and is a member of the editorial board of 20th Century British History and of the London Journal.
