Jenny Leigh Smith

Assistant Professor

(PhD, History and Anthropology of Science, Technology and Society, MIT) is a historian of technology and the environment who will be joining HTS in the spring of 2009. Her research areas include the history of modern technology, Russian and Soviet history, industrial food and agriculture, and the environmental legacy of the Cold War. Most recently, she has spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at Yale University in the Program in the History of Science and the History of Medicine. Her work has been published in an edited volume, Food Chains: Provisioning from Farmyard to Shopping Cart, and in the Modern Encyclopedia of Russian, Soviet, and Eurasian History. She is completing her first book, about the environmental impact of Soviet agricultural industrialization, provisionally entitled Animal Farms.
