Research Opportunities

Research opportunities are one of the greatest strengths of the HTS program. All HTS majors are involved in research projects as part of their required research methods class and research seminars. In addition, HTS students undertake independent research projects for either credit or pay.  These projects are individually supervised by faculty members or appropriate people in the community.

Presidential Undergraduate Research Award

Many HTS students have secured funding to conduct and present individual research through Georgia Tech’s President’s Undergraduate Research Award (PURA), awarded by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).  Students who qualify may also choose to complete an honors thesis, an option particularly useful for students continuing on to graduate school, law school, or other post-graduate education.

Research Option

Finally, the School of History, Technology, and Society also participates in the Research Option plan, offered by UROP.  Research Option offers students the opportunity for a substantial, in-depth research experience.  It offers students a taste for what long-term research can be like and provides extensive experience not found within a typical course setting.  Students are strongly encouraged at the end of their experience to work with their faculty mentor to develop a journal publication or conference presentation on the research in addition to the actual thesis.  Requirements for participation in the Research Option include: completing at least 9 hours of undergraduate research, at least 6 of which are on the same topic, writing a research proposal, taking the class LCC 4700, “Writing an Undergraduate Thesis," and completing the thesis.  For more details on the Research Option, click here.
